The History of Hotel Glaus

A Story of the Past That Lives On Today

Hotel Glaus in Banská Štiavnica is not just a place where visitors enjoy luxurious accommodation and culinary experiences – it is also a place with a fascinating history that dates back to the medieval era. This historic building has many stories to tell, stories that have shaped not only its appearance but also the character of the town.

The First House on This Site

On the site of today’s Hotel Glaus, a stone bourgeois house stood as early as the 16th century, originally serving as a residential building. During the mining of precious metals in the area, this location became an important spot for the mining industry. Archaeologists have confirmed that a mining tunnel beneath the house dates back to the 13th century, making this house one of the oldest mining sites in the region.

The Chimney Master and the Reconstruction of the House

In the 18th century, the house was owned by Jozef Pedroja, a chimney master, who had a significant influence on its appearance. After training in Italy and working in Vienna, Pedroja bought the house for 1180 gold florins, reflecting his solid financial position. During his ownership, an elegant prussian vault was created, which now adorns the restaurant. Pedroja also added a “small tower,” giving the house a unique look and providing stunning views of Banská Štiavnica.

A Community Center and Cultural Life

At the beginning of the 20th century, the house underwent a significant change. The Pedroja family sold the house to the Catholic Association, which transformed it into a community center. Thanks to the Sitno Society, which settled in the building in the 1930s, the house was opened to the public. The society organized theater performances, concerts, educational lectures, language courses, and other activities, making this space the center of cultural and social life.

The Post-War Era and Reconstruction

After World War II, when the house was state-owned, its original function and appearance began to deteriorate. In the 1970s, the house underwent a radical reconstruction into residential units, leading to significant changes in its architecture. Some original structures and historical details were permanently lost. After this period, the house languished for many years.

Restoration and the Present Day

It wasn’t until the early 21st century that the house underwent a professional and thorough restoration, during which the historical values of the building were respected. Today, Hotel Glaus offers its visitors not only comfortable accommodation and great food but also the opportunity to experience a piece of history. Restored historical details and new architectural elements are harmoniously combined to create an exclusive environment that respects its past. In addition, guests can enjoy impressive views from the terraces and hotel rooms, as well as the beautiful garden that enhances the atmosphere of this unique place
